Banks are set to swap between 80 billion and 90 billion pounds of mortgage-backed assets for Treasury bills, nearly twice the base level set by the Bank of England last month, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

Abbey has taken 15.9 per cent of the mortgage market in the UK in the first quarter. According to Santander, the Spanish owner of Abbey, the company's net lending was £2.9 billion in the first quarter, up from £1.3 billion in the previous year.

Mortgage approvals fall in March
The British Bankers Association (BBA) has released the results of a survey showing a significant drop of mortgage approvals in March. The BBA said that mortgage approvals fell from 43,147 in February down to 35,417 last month. The figures represent an annual drop of 46.2 per cent and are the lowest since the series began in 1997.
