Michael Jackson's funeral set to be bigger than Elvis' and Diana's

29 June 2009 @ 10:40 am BST

The funeral of pop star Michael Jackson, who died unexpectedly on Thursday at the age of 50, could be larger than those of Elvis Presley and Princess Diana with as many as a million people expected to travel to Los Angeles to remember the "king of pop".

The singer died of a heart attack on Thursday afternoon. However there are still questions about the cause of the heart attack and which drugs (if any) the singer was taking that may have contributed to his death.

Police in Los Angeles are preparing for a huge influx of people to the city for the funeral with one LA police chief saying, "We are preparing for an event of historic proportions. We will be cooperating closely with the family once they have decided to hold the funeral," reports the Daily Mail.

The family of Michael Jackson met at the weekend to discuss whether to hold a large scale public funeral or a private ceremony with a public memorial service later on. They are also considering whether or not to bury his body on his Neverland ranch.

Michael Jackson wished to be buried there, although he had not lived at the ranch since 2005 when he was cleared of child molestation charges. The idea is allegedly popular with the owners of the mortgage on the property as it could turn the ranch into a centre of tourism that could help pay off Jackson's substantial debts.

Since he left the property Neverland has fallen into disrepair.

Burying the singer at Neverland could make the place similar to Graceland, the home and final resting place of Elvis Presley, whose funeral in 1977 drew 80,000 people. In 1997 the funeral of Princess Dianna drew a quarter of a million mourners. With a million people expected to attend Jackson's funeral is expected to be unprecedented in size.

The funeral is expected to be attended by stars such as Paul McCartney, Elizabeth Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Lisa Marie Presley.
