Darling says central banks must help markets
Posted 16 September 2008 @ 08:29 am GMT
Chancellor Alistair Darling said on Tuesday that the world's central banks must act together to give stability to the financial system while market turmoil persists.
Darling also said a fall in the oil price on Monday should be seen as a positive development, but warned that financial regulators and institutions would have to tighten up their systems to ensure the risk of future banking crises was reduced.
"We need to take action internationally, and we are," he told BBC radio. "It means that central banks need to help - and yesterday you saw right across the world the American Fed(eral Reserve), the ECB, our own Bank of England and Japan, all intervening."
