British Energy said to agree EDF takeover
British Energy has agreed to a takeover deal by Electricite de France (EDF) in a deal valuing the nuclear power company at 775 pence per share, a source briefed on the matter said on Friday.
According to Reuters the source said that EDF is trying to confirm a deal in which British energy company Centrica will take a minority stake in British Energy. The source claimed EDF hoped to confirm a deal with British Energy and Centrica by Wednesday.
The government currently owns 35 per cent of British Energy. The firm became a takeover target when the government gave approval in January to build new nuclear power stations.
The 775 pence per share bid would value British Energy at £12.4 billion. On Thursday shares in British Energy closed at 729 pence per share.
On Thursday British Energy said it was in "advanced discussions with one party" but added there was no certainty of an offer being made.
