Retail sales down 3.9% in June
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released figures on Thursday showing a 3.9 per cent fall in retail sales in June. The annual rate of growth of retail sales fell to 2.2 per cent.
The news of a fall in retail sales was widely expected despite a surprise rise in retail sales of 3.6 per cent in May. The increase in May was attributed to good weather boosting sales of drinks and summer clothes.
The ONS said that retail sales were up 0.6 per cent in the three months to June, compared with the previous three months.
According to the figures given by the ONS, sales in household goods fell at the fastest rate since 1991, whilst sales in textiles, clothing and footwear experienced the sharpest decline since 2002.
In non-specialised stores sales were up 3.1 per cent, the fastest growth since August of last year, whilst sales in predominately food stores and the non-store retailing and repair sector were both up 6.5 per cent over the year.
