Google has been named as the top brand in the UK in a consumer survey by Superbrands. The internet search engine was previously listed third.

Software firm Microsoft, previous holders of the top spot, went down to second place and carmaker Mercedes-Benz were rated as the third top brand in the UK.

Supermarkets dropped significantly down the list of top brands thanks to rising food prices, with Asda down 253 places from the previous year, Tesco down 230 places and Sainsbury's dropping 194 spots.

Stephen Cheliotis, Chairman of the Superbrands Council, said, "As the results make clear, lifestyle brands - particularly those in the technology sector have considerably more sway with the public than every day staples such as the supermarkets which now seem further than ever from the affections of the British people. As the spectre of rising food costs continues, they are likely to come under further scrutiny."

"The results are also a further sign that Google is continuing its dominance in the UK. A few months ago the online giant also beat Microsoft to the top of the Business Superbrands list which looks at the brands making the most impact in the business sector. When looked at with today's results it is clear that Google is the brand that people value at work and in their personal lives."

The top ten brands were:

1: Google

2: Microsoft

3: Mercedes-Benz

4: BBC
