Retail sales down again in June
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said on Tuesday that retail sales in the UK fell 0.4 per cent in June, compared with the previous year. The BRC said that sales were lower than a year ago for three out of the past four months, the worst since summer 2005.
Sales in June were hit by changeable weather, following a sunny May, said the BRC. Sales in furniture and homeware fell despite continued discounts and promotions. Sales in clothing and footwear also fell sharply from May. Food and drink was the only sector which saw significant sales growth.
The BRC said "Consumer confidence has continued to fall, reaching new record lows. Increasing demands on household budgets and the weakness of the housing market mean shoppers are increasingly price-conscious and reluctant to spend on big-ticket items."
