England players decline NZ police interview
Four England rugby players at the centre of an alleged sexual assault while on tour in New Zealand have declined to be interviewed by police, a local police force said in a statement on Friday.
Members of the Auckland Police's sexual assault team flew to Christchurch, where England are preparing for the second test due to be played on Saturday, to speak to the players involved.
"The players have advised police - via legal representation this morning - that they are declining to be interviewed by police on the matter at this stage," the statement said.
Police said they would continue to investigate the allegation that a woman was raped and/or sexually assaulted by four players.
No formal complaint has been made about the alleged incident, in a room at the team's Auckland hotel after England lost the first test to New Zealand 37-20 on June 14.
The English team management said in a statement that the players were within their rights to refuse to be interviewed by the police but would continue to have dialogue with them.
"The players continue to deny the allegations and have the full support of the England management, coaches and players," England Rugby said in a statement.
