J Sainsbury said on Wednesday that its total sales had risen 8.1 per cent, including fuel, in the first quarter ended 14 June 2008. Like for like sales in the period were up 7.3 per cent, including fuel.

Justin King, chief executive of the supermarket chain said that fuel price inflation had helped boost like for like sales in the period.

King said that non food sales were continuing to grow strongly and that online operations were continuing to perform well, with online sales growth of over 40 per cent.

Sainsbury's opened four new stores in the quarter, one of which was a replacement store.

Justin King said, "The challenging economic environment continued throughout the quarter. However, we are now serving nearly 18 million customers a week (2) and have delivered sales growth in line with our expectations. Whilst we anticipate that the environment will remain challenging, we operate from a strong financial position and our expectations for the full year remain unchanged."
