"Sex and the City" has knocked Indiana Jones off the UK movies top spot but failed to equal its opening box office take, according to Screen International figures on Tuesday.

The film version of the hit TV series featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis took 8.77 million pounds in its opening weekend.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," with Harrison Ford back in the role after nearly two decades, took 12.2 million in its first week, although it showed at 78 more sites last week.

Although it was down in second spot after only one week as the two blockbusters went head-to-head, Indiana Jones took another 5.5 million pounds in its second week.

In third spot, down one place, was "What Happens in Vegas," with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher as a couple living with the bittersweet consequences of a quickie marriage.

Fourth, also down one, was superhero caper "Iron Man," while "Nim's Island" with "Little Miss Sunshine" star Abigail Breslin was unchanged at five.

New at six was "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay," picking up the whacky adventures of the cult favourites four years on as they travel to Amsterdam in search of love.

Down three at seven was "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," with Russell Brand, while at eight, down from six, was the big screen version of the 1960s TV series, "Speed Racer."

The comedy "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" made its debut at nine with Martin Lawrence as a big-shot TV host returning to his roots in small-town Georgia.

At 10, down one place, were the thoughts on life, love and motherhood of five Beirut women in "Caramel."
