British Energy boosts FTSE on Friday

The FTSE 100 share index rose 0.5 per cent by 8:52am on Friday. The index put on 34 points, rising to 6,285.8.
British Energy shares performed well, rising 5.7 per cent after saying it had received a number of bids above its total share value. British Airways also performed well, going up 3.6 per cent after announcing strong growth in profits and its first dividend since 2001.
Oil firms did well, with BP and Royal Dutch Shell rising 1.1 per cent, while BG Group was up 1.4 per cent.
Centrica, said to be one of the bidders for British Energy, also saw its shares rise 0.3 per cent.
Banks also performed well with Alliance & Leicester, HBOS and Lloyds TSB all rising around one per cent.
