FTSE falls early on Thursday

The FTSE 100 share index dropped early on Thursday. At 8:39am the index was down 37.6 points to 6,223.4 (down 0.6 per cent).
Banks were among the early losers with Barclays, HBOS, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Chartered all down 0.2-2.3 per cent each.
Carphone Warehouse was also down 3.1 per cent after announcing it would be selling a 50 per cent stake in its retail unit to US company Best Buy.
Insurance firms also were among the early losers with Old Mutual down 1.9 per cent and Royal and SunAlliance down 2.3 per cent.
Oil firms BP and Royal Dutch Shell also saw their share values fall.
Early gainers included Next, up 6.5 per cent, and software company Sage Group, who rose 2.4 per cent.
