BAE to cut nearly 600 jobs
BAE Systems said on Thursday it hoped to use voluntary redundancies to cut nearly 600 jobs from two sites in England.
Europe's largest defence contractor is cutting 134 jobs from its Woodford site near Manchester and 450 jobs from Brough, near Hull on the east coast.
Brough is the main manufacturing centre for BAE's Hawk trainer jet, and it had been hoping for an order from the United Arab Emirates which failed to materialise.
"The reasons for the redundancy programme ... are changes to business requirements and workload and BAE Systems ... will obviously be working closely with employees and their representatives to mitigate the loss of these posts," BAE said in a statement.
BAE said it was looking at avenues for redeploying workers.
"This could involve individuals relocating to other parts of our UK business and, if necessary and where practical, retraining," BAE added.
Shares in BAE were down 1 percent at 499.25 pence at 12.05 p.m.
