HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has encouraged people to file thir tax returns as soon as possible following problems with it's website on which people are supposed to submit their tax returns.

Over 200,000 people managed to submit their Self-Assesment returns on the day of the original deadline on Thursday 31 January. However a crash of the HMRC website on Thursday meant that many people were unable to submit returns on time. The government office subsequently extended the deadline to midnight on 1st February.

According to the BBC, despite extending the deadline many people have emailed them saying they had still been unable to submit their tax returns in time due to continuing problems with the website.

Those who failed to submit their returns by the Friday deadline face an automatic fine of 100 plus interest on the amount of tax due.

However HMRC has said it will consider problems with its web service as a "reasonable excuse" should people wish to appeal against fines for late returns. HMRC also said that those who experienced problems submitting their tax returns on time should do so "as soon as you possibly can".
