Two major firms have pulled out of the running to be suppliers for the British Governments national identity card scheme.

Aerospace and defence company BAE Systems and American technology company Accenture have both pulled out from being considered as suppliers for the scheme.

The news is yet another blow for the national identity card scheme. Just a few days ago leaked documents suggested that the scheme would be delayed until 2012, two years beyond the planned launch date of 2010.

Recent incidents of the government losing personal data have also led to a drop in already low public support for the ID card scheme.

Both BAE and Accenture were on a shortlist of eight companies to make the framework for the ID card scheme.

BAE said, "at this stage of the competition our assessment is that our bid would not contain every element necessary to deliver to the customer's requirement. We continue to monitor the programme with interest", reports Reuters.

Accenture did not specify why they had dropped out of the running but said it remained committed to its work in the UK government.

The other companies on the shortlist are CSC, EDS, Fujitsu, IBM, Steria and Thales.
