There were 122,100 people unemployed last month in this Scandinavian country of 5.4 million, according to Statistics Denmark. The figure was unchanged from the 4.4 percent recorded in July. In August 2005, it was 5.7 percent.

The Danish labor market has improved slowly but steadily since December 2003, when the jobless number peaked at 186,000.

On June 20, parliament backed a plan to sustain Denmark's extensive welfare state in the face of an aging population.

The plan includes gradually raising the retirement age from the current 65 to 67 by 2027. A popular scheme allowing people to retire with a limited pension will be raised from 60 to 62 by 2022.
